Celebrating temperate rainforests on International Day of ForestsCelebrating temperate rainforests on International Day of Forests
Saturday 21st March 2026

On International Day of Forests, we’re celebrating one of the rarest habitats on Earth, our temperate rainforests. In the Southwest of England, small but precious fragments like Wistman’s Wood and Black a Tor Copse still survive on Dartmoor, ancient, moisture rich landscapes shaped by the Atlantic climate.

With around 90% of Britain’s temperate rainforest lost, what remains is globally important. That’s why the Duchy is working with partners, including Natural England, Moor Trees and The Woodland Trust to protect and restore these special places so nature enriches people, and people enrich nature.

Forests like these connect our past with our future. By restoring and protecting them today, we’re helping ensure that the landscapes, wildlife and communities that depend on them can thrive for generations to come.
