Get to know the region:
• Over 70,000 acres of land - the Duchy's largest landholdings including peatland, woodland and marine.
• By the end of 2025 we will have restored almost 3,000 acres of degraded peatland habitat.
• Over 50,000 acres of common land which has been used by local farmers for hundreds of years to graze cattle, sheep and ponies.
• Over 4,200 acres of foreshore and fundus (riverbed).
• Two Duchy Focus Farms - Brimpts Farm and Huccaby Farm
A nature rich landscape
Dartmoor is rich in natural capital assets such as peatlands, woodlands, rhos pastures and species-rich hay meadows. We are members of the South West Peatland Partnership who are collaborating to restore degraded peatland.

The rolling valleys within the lowland estate are intertwined with farming which contributes to the stunning landscape and the delivery of a wide range of habitat. Dartmoor remains a working landscape, with farms occupying over 17,000 acres of the estate.

Since 2021, we have been working in conjunction with Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) as part of a five-year Dartmoor Curlew Recovery Project, which includes the reintroduction of these increasingly rare birds to the moor. Find out more about the recent Curlew updates.

A place for people and nature
We work closely with a wide range of organisations and the communities that share the use and enjoyment of Dartmoor. They include tenants, parish councils, sports clubs and local authorities, such as Dartmoor National Park Authority.

From hiking and horse riding to orienteering and climbing, many people visit the moors to enjoy outdoor activities. The wild terrain also forms a valuable training facility for the Ministry of Defence which they've used since the 1800s.

The Duchy owns significant sections of the East and West Dart rivers, and their tributaries. People can go fishing for brown trout, sea trout and salmon using a licence granted on the Duchy's behalf, by the Westcountry Rivers Trust.
